Grave stele of hoplite Aristion
520-510 BC.
Marble. Height 2.40 m. From Velanideza, Attica
National Archaeological Museum Γ 29
Aristion is depicted in full armor.
The citizens-hoplites defended Athens, an ideal that was perceived both as a duty and privilege of the Athenian democracy. At the base of the stele the name of the sculptor is written (work of Aristocles).
